Maybe not many of you know, but “The Jesus prayer” is one of most efficient prayers you can use in any occasion. Nowadays you hear about different spiritual or self-help technics, you try some of them or all of them. Then you may realize that all the technics come down to this one, small and easy prayer.
“Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy upon me, a sinner.”
When I first heard about it, long time ago, my mind was complaining, didn’t want to accept it, because translated in Serbian it goes something like this:
“Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on sinful me.”
The part “sinful me” didn’t go with my new view of God as loving parent, parent who is not condemning or judging . I was against any kind of judgment and was fed up with guilt and people trying to put more and more guilt upon me or anyone else, condemning, looking for any reason to condemn you or me looking for any reason to condemn myself. I was protesting and refused to use it. My God loves me as I am and no one can tell me that I am a sinner.
It took me long a time to understand what that “sinful me” means.
It doesn’t mean that we are all sinful in a condemning way, but that we all, without being aware of it, do some things or think some thoughts or have some feelings, that are not coming out of love for ourselves and others, but out of negative emotions like envy, spite, personal disappointments, impatience, etc.
Well thank God, I finally understood it, because it helped me enormously and it still does – when some prayer stick to you, when you feel it from the inside as it is giving you some kind of relief and serenity, you tend to use that prayer often. I have couple of them as you may notice by now. Of course, my favorite is “The Lords Prayer“
In these videos The Jesus Prayer and many other things are simply and honestly explained by the monks!
Big thanks to “vladimiris13” for uploading them to YouTube – lets hope they will not be deleted any time soon 🙂
